Citizenship and Naturalization
Chicago Citizenship and Naturalization Attorneys
For legal permanent residents, going through the naturalization process to obtain U.S. citizenship has many benefits. U.S. citizens can vote, hold public office, sponsor family members for permanent legal residency, travel on a U.S. passport, and enjoy the protection of the U.S. government while abroad. The naturalization process is not without its challenges, however. At Ana M. Mencini & Associates, P.C. we are experienced in helping permanent legal residents become U.S. citizens. We understand how the process works, the potential obstacles immigrants can face and how to overcome those obstacles.
Requirements for U.S. Citizenship
There are many general requirements legal permanent residents must fulfill prior to applying for citizenship. These include:
- Establishing legal permanent residency (obtaining a valid green card).
- Living in the U.S. for at least five (5) years or at least three (3) years if married to a U.S. citizen.
- Being able to read and write basic English.
- Passing the U.S. civics and history test.
- Demonstrating good moral character while living in the U.S. (no criminal behavior).
- Pledging allegiance to the Constitution of the United States.
- Being over 18 years of age.
Additionally, there are requirements for continuous residency and physical presence in the U.S. prior to citizenship. Our experienced immigration attorneys can walk you though all of the citizenship requirements prior to filing for naturalization. For some applicants, there may be exceptions to general requirements stated above.
Problems with the Naturalization ProcessIt is not uncommon for those seeking citizenship to discover obstacles to naturalization along the way. These obstacles may stem from criminal accusations, residency or physical presence problems or other matters. At Ana M. Mencini & Associates, P.C., we seek to identify these potential pitfalls prior to filing for naturalization so that we can determine how to best overcome them.
