Requirements for the TN NAFTA Visa

Of all the types of work visas, the TN NAFTA visa is one of the most complicated and specific. Made possible under NAFTA, the TN visa covers only citizens of Mexico and Canada and only specific occupations. Applications must include proof of:

• Mexican or Canadian citizenship
• A job offer in the U.S. not to last more than one year, unless the employee files for renewal
• Occupation that is on the NAFTA list of professions
• Professional and specialized qualifications or degrees

A TN NAFTA visa can be renewed after one year and there is no limit on the number of renewals. Unlike the H-1B work visa - of which only a limited number are issued - these temporary work visas are often flexible and easy to obtain. For Canadians, applications are approved right at border crossings by border officials and TN status can be renewed at the border or by mail within the U.S.
